National Medical Capabilities Group

The trusted measure of COVID-19's impact at each hospital around the US, and how it is affecting the country's healthcare infrastructure.

Strike Labs targeted a new opportunity to generate a forward-leaning revolutionary capability via an online portal to map the impacts of how COVID-19 is affecting the health care infrastructure of the country. The initial data collection was completed by contacting every hospital in the United States, obtaining the “demand-side” data from entities by contacting medical centers (https://nationalmedicalcapabilities.us/). Strike Labs then went on to expand the capabilities by obtaining the “supply-side” data from entities that manufacture and support the PPE supply (https://ppexng.com/).

Strike Labs utilized data.gov to retrieve the official list of hospitals from the Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data (HIFLD). The nationwide listing included 7,582 hospitals throughout the United States. Since the latest update to data.gov was published at the end of 2019, several hundred hospitals have closed, merged, simply no longer in existence or the data provided on the website was incorrect. Strike Labs has analyzed and cataloged each hospital’s information and corrected outdated details. The team then augmented the data concerning each hospital with the hospital’s corresponding LinkedIn profiles, Twitter handles and website donation links. Strike Labs also added additional hospitals that were not included in the HIFLD listing to use as supplemental data points, that being said Strike Labs primarily focused on collecting data on hospitals that appeared in the data.gov repository. The National Medical Capability group is collecting five general types of information from each hospital; they are as follows:

  1. Medical Device Needs the category of medical devices that are needed by the hospital.

  2. Patient Impact - number of patients that have had medical attention within the facility, the number of patients hospitalized, the number of ICU admissions and residents, and the number of deaths.

  3. Staff Capabilities - the number of doctors, the number of nurses, and administrative staff, as well as how many staff members are sick or ill.

  4. Hospital Capacity - number of total staff count, the total number of ICU beds, the total number of acute medical beds, and the occupancy of those beds.

  5. COVID-19 Test Reporting - number of tests: ordered, failed, positive, negative, etc.

Currently, this capability is in hibernation.  We would love to pass this off to the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or get under contract to maintain and expand the capability.
